Nigeria, Africa's largest economy and most populous country, with a population of around 237.5 million, continues to demonstrate strong consumption potential supported by steady economic growth. In 2025, Nigeria’s GDP reached approximately USD 285 billion, with a growth rate of 3.90%, while total imports amounted to USD 43.0 billion, reflecting robust demand for goods and services.

The country remains in the early stages of industrialization, with a significant reliance on imports, making it a highly attractive consumer market. Nigeria is one of China’s key trading partners in Africa, with imported textiles dominating the local market and accounting for a substantial share. Among these, a large proportion of textile and apparel products are sourced from China. The top product categories include clothing, wax-printed fabrics, and footwear.

Despite West Africa being one of the world’s major cotton-producing regions—with cotton prices significantly lower than those in the United States, China, and India—Nigeria’s domestic textile industry remains underdeveloped. To strengthen local production capacity, the Nigerian government has been actively promoting the development of a dedicated textile and garment special economic zone since 2018.

With its large population base, rising demand, and ongoing industrial initiatives, Nigeria continues to present significant growth potential for the textile and apparel industry.
